Express Entry manages skilled worker applications for permanent residence. Candidates create a profile, receive a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score, and enter a pool. IRCC then selects the highest-scoring candidates and invites them to apply for permanent residence.
How it works
How the Express Entry process works
Determine eligibility
Confirm you qualify for at least one of the based on your work experience, education, and language ability.
Language test & ECA
Complete an approved language test (IELTS, CELPIP, PTE Core, TEF, or TCF) and obtain an Educational Credential Assessment if your education was completed outside Canada.
Submit your profile
Create your Express Entry profile on the IRCC website. You’ll receive a CRS score and enter the candidate pool. Keep your profile up-to-date.
Valid: 12 months
Wait for an invitation
IRCC conducts regular draws from the pool. If your CRS score meets or exceeds the cut-off, you’ll receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA).
Draws: roughly every 2 weeks
Apply for permanent residence
Submit your completed application, all supporting documentation, and the government fees within the deadline provided.
Deadline: 60 days
Biometrics & decision
Submit biometrics when IRCC requests them. IRCC aims to process your application within six months of receiving it.

Expired documents kill eligibility
Language tests, ECAs, and settlement fund proof all have expiry windows. If any expire while you’re in the pool, you become ineligible. An RCIC tracks every date and ensures nothing lapses.
Mandatory updates are your responsibility
IRCC requires you to update your profile when your circumstances change — new job, marriage, a new child. Failing to update is treated as misrepresentation. An RCIC manages these updates for you.
Documentation
Reference letters, financial proof, and supporting documents are where most DIY applications break down. An RCIC guides what goes into them so they meet officer expectations.
