Permanent Residence Alberta Advantage Immigration Program
Alberta Advantage Immigration Program
Provincial nomination for workers and graduates building a life in Alberta.
Viviane Trudel, RCIC-IRB Licence #R723047
Alberta’s provincial route to permanent residence for skilled workers already building a life in the province. The Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP) nominates candidates who meet Alberta’s economic, sector and occupational priorities, most often:
- Temporary foreign workers already employed in Alberta
- Post-graduation work permit holders already employed in Alberta
A nomination either adds 600 points to an Express Entry profile or opens a direct provincial path to permanent residence.
Who the AAIP is for
- Temporary foreign workers employed full-time in Alberta on an eligible work permit
- Post-graduation work permit holders who graduated from an Alberta publicly funded institution
- Express Entry candidates whose occupation matches Alberta’s priorities, including health care, technology and law enforcement
- Newcomers with a job offer in a designated rural Alberta community
- Workers whose permit is approaching expiry and who need a clear nomination timeline
- Applicants with a previous refusal or a complex immigration history
- Families including a spouse or common-law partner and dependent children
AAIP representation
Eligibility and strategy development
- Assessment against the requirements of each AAIP stream, including your work permit, occupation, Alberta work experience, language and education
- Review of your job offer and employer against the stream’s requirements
- Review of the immigration history and admissibility of the applicant and every family member
- Early identification of risks, so they are addressed before filing rather than after a refusal
- A recommendation on the stream or pathway most likely to lead to a nomination: Alberta Opportunity, Alberta Express Entry or Rural Renewal
- A timeline that protects your status in Canada, weighed against work permit expiry and processing times
- A plan for the permanent residence application that follows a nomination
- One consistent strategy for the whole family when a spouse or dependent children are included
Application preparation and submission
- A personalized document checklist, including the employer and community documents your stream requires
- Preparation and review of every AAIP and IRCC form, checked for consistency
- A written submission showing how you meet the stream’s requirements
- An organized application package, submitted on your behalf as your authorized representative
Post-submission support
- Monitoring of your file and handling of all AAIP and IRCC correspondence, including requests for documents
- After a nomination, preparation and filing of your permanent residence application
- Updates on changes such as a new job, a marriage, the birth of a child or a change in status
- If an application is refused, a review of the decision and advice on reconsideration or reapplication
AAIP questions
For the worker streams, in effect yes. The Alberta Opportunity and Rural Renewal streams are built for people already working in the province, and the Express Entry pathways require an Alberta job offer. A genuine connection to Alberta sits at the centre of every stream.
For temporary foreign workers already living and working full-time in Alberta on an eligible work permit — including LMIA-based permits, post-graduation work permits from Alberta publicly-funded institutions, and certain LMIA-exempt and open permits. You need a full-time job offer from an Alberta employer in your current, eligible occupation, and 12 months full-time in your occupation in Alberta within the last 18 months — or 6 months for PGWP holders.
Alberta draws a limited number of candidates from Canada’s federal Express Entry pool who meet its economic, sector and occupational priorities. A Notification of Interest from the AAIP, followed by a provincial nomination, adds 600 points to your CRS score. Dedicated pathways run through this stream, including the Health Care Pathway, the Accelerated Tech Pathway, and the Law Enforcement Pathway — each requiring an Alberta job offer and receiving expedited handling.
A community-driven path for newcomers settling in a designated rural Alberta community. You need a full-time job offer from an employer in a designated community and an endorsement letter from that community before you can apply to the AAIP for nomination. Language, work-experience and education thresholds broadly follow the Opportunity Stream — the community endorsement is the distinguishing requirement, and the community must hold designated status first.
A provincial nomination through the Alberta Express Entry Stream adds 600 points to your Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score. In practice that places you well above any cut-off and all but guarantees an Invitation to Apply for permanent residence in the next federal draw.
The Alberta Opportunity Stream recognises PGWP holders from Alberta publicly-funded institutions and lowers the work-experience requirement to six months full-time in your occupation in Alberta. If your profile is competitive in Express Entry, the Alberta Express Entry Stream may be the faster route. We assess both before you commit.
For the Alberta Opportunity Stream: CLB/NCLC 5 in each English skill for NOC TEER 0–3 occupations or 4 for TEER 4–5 (CLB 7 for nurse aides), with test results under two years old, plus a high-school-equivalent Educational Credential Assessment. Thresholds vary by stream and occupation — mapping that out is exactly the work we do before you apply.
Yes. Alongside the worker streams, the AAIP runs dedicated entrepreneur streams — the Rural Entrepreneur, Graduate Entrepreneur, Farm, and Foreign Graduate Entrepreneur streams — for those buying, starting, or scaling a business in the province. If that is your goal, raise it at your Strategy & Partnership Session and we will advise on fit.
